Nomination and Selection Process

OVERVIEW

A pro-bono Nominating Committee and an independent Selection Panel, coordinated by the event committee, will manage the nomination and selection process.

The Nominating Committee, comprised of business executives and research analysts, will screen nominations and provide information to the independent Selection Panel, which will make the final decision on finalists and winners.

The Selection Panel, comprised of business and academic leaders, will select the finalists and the winners in each category. Members of the Selection Panel include:

Tom Campbell, Dean, Haas School of Business, U.C. Berkeley
John Gunn, Chief Executive Officer & Chief Investment Officer, Dodge and Cox
Jeffrey O. Henley, Chairman, Oracle 
Mary Huss, Publisher, San Francisco Business Times
David Roux, Managing Director, Silver Lake Partners
Phil Schlein, Venture Partner, U.S. Venture Partners

Nominations for each category, with the exception of "Hall of Fame – Lifetime Achievement", will be widely solicited throughout the Bay Area. The "Hall of Fame – Lifetime Achievement" award recipient will be chosen by the independent Selection Panel.

Submitting Nominations: 2008 Nominations are now closed.

Who May Submit a Nomination: Anyone may submit a nomination in any category. Employees, bankers, attorneys, public relations managers are excellent sources for nominations. Self-nominations are encouraged.

Eligibility: Company must be headquartered in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sonoma or Solano counties.

Awarded to CFO who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her company’s performance as well as to the greater Bay Area business community over the past year for:

  • Public Company with revenues above $500MM
  • Public Company with revenues up to $500MM
  • Non-Public Company
  • Venture-Backed Company
  • Community Service
  • Transformation Agent
  • Hall of Fame – Lifetime Achievement


CRITERIA

Public Company with revenues above $500MM
Public Company with revenues up to $500MM
Non-Public Company

CFO who has made outstanding contribution to his/her company’s performance as well as to the greater Bay Area business community over the past year.

Has played key role in significant achievement of his/her company, such as:

  • Managing rapid growth, providing necessary services and infrastructure to support growth
  • Achieving operational efficiency, cost reduction, cash flow improvement
  • Strategic acquisition or divestiture, including implementation and integration
  • Innovative financing
  • Strategic partnerships
  • Significant new customers or contracts
  • Implementation of best practices in Finance
  • Capital structure improvement
  • Risk management innovation and improvement

Achievement is measurable in terms of:

  • Financial performance
    1. Revenue growth
    2. Margins
    3. Balance sheet
    4. Market cap, etc.
  • Improved competitive position
  • Improved company image

  • Outstanding Mentor
  • Extraordinary performer in difficult circumstances

Venture-Backed Company
CFO of a company under $150 million in revenues who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her company’s performance as evidenced by significant growth and by recognition of the company as a leader in its industry.

Has played key role in company achieving significant milestones, such as:

  • Managing rapid growth
  • Achieving operational efficiency
  • Strategic acquisition or divestiture
  • Capital structure improvement
  • Strategic partnerships
  • Implementation of best practices

Company Criteria:

  • Is currently or has in the past been backed by venture investors
  • Has demonstrated significant and sustainable growth over a three-year period
  • Has become a leader in its industry sector
  • Public or Non-Public

Achievement is measurable in terms of:

  • Financial performance 
  • Improved competitive position
  • Improved company image
  • Consistency

Community Service
CFO of a public or private company who, in addition to excelling professionally, has given time and energy to building community and enhancing the quality of life in the greater Bay Area.

  • Participation on Boards of charitable and civic organizations
  • Leadership in fundraising initiatives
  • Pro-bono & volunteer work
  • Encouragement of employee involvement in community service
  • Advocacy
  • A visible proponent in the community
  • Promotion of community interests in the legislative arena

Transformation Agent
CFO of a public or private company who has broken through the traditional boundaries of finance in contributing to a significant transaction, transformation or turnaround of his/her company.

Has played key role in a significant financial transaction or series of transactions resulting in transformation of company, such as:

  • Recapitalization/Restructuring
  • Acquisition/divestiture
  • IPO

Achievement is measurable in terms of:

  • Capital structure improvement
  • Growth in market cap and/or revenue
  • Positive ratings changes from equity research analysts and/or debt rating agencies.
  • Consistency

Personal Characteristics:

  • Outstanding team builder
  • Extraordinary performer in difficult circumstances

Hall of Fame – Lifetime Achievement*
Awarded to a current or former CFO of a public or private company whose contribution has significantly and uniquely impacted the greater Bay Area business community over the course of his/her career.

*The Hall of Fame – Lifetime Achievement award recipient will be chosen by the independent Selection Panel.
